Astroworld Tragedy: Authorities Investigating “Derranged Fan” Injecting Others

Update 17:05 EST Nov. 6:

Per CNN, authorities have been investigating multiple claims of someone running around injecting others with a substance. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner confirmed those claims during a press conference Saturday, citing a report from a security guard who was treated for an overdose.

“We do have a report of a security officer, according to the medical staff that was out and treated him last night, that he was reaching over to restrain or grab a citizen and he felt a prick in his neck,” Finner shared at the podium. “When he was examined, he went unconscious, they administered Narcan. He was revived and the medical staff did notice a prick similar to what you would get if somebody was trying to inject. That is one part of it.”

It was a tragic night (Nov. 5) at Travis Scott’s “Astroworld Festival”. 8 concert-goers died and dozens more were injured. Officials are calling the festival a “mass casualty event,” says the Associated Press, .

“The crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage, and that caused some panic, and it started causing some injuries,” the Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said. “People began to fall out, become unconscious, and it created additional panic.” The Astroworld Festival sold 100K tickets in one hour and was held at Houston’s NRG Park, Scott’s hometown.

Fans packed into the stadium, trampling over security and knocking over (the very necessary) metal detectors.

Reports: Drug injection

Authorities are investigating the tragedy and some early reports are disgusting. According to TMZ, there may have been a “derranged fan” injecting other fans with an unknown substance. The serial injections caused mass hysteria and a stampede that some didn’t survive.

Here’s the statement from TMZ earlier this morning:

A source connected to Astroworld tells TMZ, someone in the crowd went crazy and began injecting people with some sort of drug, which caused panic and then a surge. The source says authorities are trying to determine if those who went into cardiac arrest were the ones injected. We’re told one of those who died is a 10-year-old. The source says it appears to be a targeted attack. We have not confirmed this report, but the source is a key person involved in the festival.

It’s important to remember that the investigation is on-going. When we hear something, we’ll update.

Travis Scott’s Statement

I can imagine that finding the words after an event like that is tough. But, Travis Scott has released a statement:

“I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival.

Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.

I am committed to working together with the Houston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Houston PD, Fire Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support.

Love You All.”

Witness: “Security guards were carrying bodies.”

Like so many others on social media, I went down the rabbit-hole of footage from the tragic night in Houston. Some of the most poignant recaps were the written eye-witness accounts. “It was like hell,” 17-year-old Nick Johnson told the Times. “Everybody was just in the back, trying to rush to the front.”

Hell, indeed.

Another chilling recount comes from a nurse named Madeline, who was there with her boyfriend. She told TMZ that she began to feel lightheaded as the crowd pushed closer to the stage. “I passed out from the constant pressure on my chest and was one of the first people to be carried. They threw me on top of other people and crowd surfed me to other people, who lifted me over a fence where security was waiting.”

She continued, “security guards were bringing bodies from that area to the VIP area. I see security carrying people who are not moving.” Once she regained consciousness, she helped administer aid to others.

Then, these words from Seanna on Instagram shook me.

Waiting for answers.

As mentioned, authorities are continuing to investigate what really happened in Astroworld. An event of this magnitude will certainly take some time to gather answers. This is unofficial but, I keep hearing the word “substances”. I don’t think that’s by coincidence.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. Those concertgoers will be haunted by a night in Astroworld.
